Speak up Progression

Key Dates:

Week 7 (5th to 9th June):
  • Introduce the Speak Up Awards to students in Year 4, 5, and 6 at Waangkininy
  • Explain the aims and rules of the competition.
  • Distribute the guidelines to all students.
  • Encourage students to start thinking about potential speech topics.
  • Conduct a class brainstorming session to help students generate speech topics.
  • Teach students about the importance of research and depth of knowledge in their speeches.

Week 8 (12th to 16th June):
  • Allow students time to research their chosen topics.
  • Assist students in organizing their research findings.
  • Teach students how to structure a speech with an introduction, body, and conclusion.
  • Discuss the significance of logical development and cohesion in speechwriting.
  • Guide students in developing their own speech outlines.

  Week 9 (19th to 23rd June)
  • Help students in composing their speeches based on their outlines.
  • Emphasize the use of appropriate language, including vocabulary, sentence structure, and figures of speech.
  • Provide feedback and support as students refine their speech content.
  • Finalize the written speeches by the end of this week.

Week 10 (26th to 30th June):
  • Explain the importance of effective speech delivery, including vocal and visual impact.
  • Teach students about vocal techniques such as volume, pitch, pace, and pronunciation.
  • Practice proper stance, gestures, and eye contact during speech delivery.
  • Introduce the concept of using palm cards for guidance rather than reading.
  • Allow students time to practice delivering their speeches in front of their classmates.
  • Provide constructive feedback on presentation skills, including clarity, confidence, and audience engagement.
  • Encourage students to work on improving their delivery based on the feedback received.
  • Continuously emphasize sincerity, credibility, and conviction in their speeches.

HOLIDAYS
  • Practice, Practice, Practice

Week 1 - Term 3 (17th to 21st July):
  • Conduct Year group finals where each student delivers their speech in front of their peers.
  • Assign three adjudicators to evaluate and provide scores for each speech.
  • Determine the top students from each Year group who will advance to the whole school finals.
  • Announce the finalists and provide them with feedback to further enhance their speeches.

Week 2 - Term 3 (24th to 28th July):
  • Conduct the whole school finals where the finalists from each Year group compete.
  • Assign at least three adjudicators to evaluate and provide scores for each speech.
  • Determine the top three students who will represent the school in the Speak Up Finals.
  • Provide feedback and commendation to all participants to acknowledge their efforts.

Weeks 3 and 4 - Term 3 (31st July to 9th August):
  • The top three students who will compete in the Speak Up Finals have two weeks to further practice and refine their speeches.
  • Encourage them to seek additional feedback and guidance from teachers and peers.
  • Provide support and assistance in preparation for the final competition on the 9th August.

9th August:
  • Speak Up Finals: The top three students present their speeches to a panel of at least four adjudicators.
  • The Research Adjudicator assesses the depth of research conducted by each student.
  • Scores from all adjudicators are collected, and the winner of the Speak Up Awards is announced.
